ACADEMICS

At Oakwood ISD, we are Dedicated to Excellence! From pre-kindergarten through high school, your child’s academic career is in good hands. Beyond the degrees they have already earned, our teachers receive additional education and training to help them use the best programs available, so that your child will learn effectively and excel.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

We know that all children have different strengths, and that they learn in various ways. The many programs we participate in serve to meet the needs of all of our students. Some of our academic programs include:

ACCELERATED READER

Our elementary students use the Accelerated Reader software monitoring program that accesses a student’s reading level and suggests titles of books at that level, thus encouraging them to read more.

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE)

Students can earn business and industry endorsements for graduation in Ag mechanics and marketing. Other CTE courses are also offered as electives. We welcome the participation of all of our students, and we will do our best to make sure that a student’s lack of English skills is not a barrier to participating and learning in all of our programs. Our goal is to be able to offer as many career and technical education courses as possible for our students. This area continues to grow throughout our district.

KHAN ACADEMY

Kahn Academy is a free, online collection of more than 47,000 short video tutorials, students learn mathematics, history, science, art history, and more.

UIL ACADEMIC CONTESTS

The University Interscholastic League provides educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests. Created by The University of Texas at Austin in 1910, it has grown into the largest inter-school organization of its kind in the world.

OISD is committed to active participation at all levels of UIL academic participation. The elementary, junior high, and high school campuses are highly involved in UIL academics and OISD has a rich tradition of excellence in UIL academic competitions, including C-X Debate and One Act Play.

DUAL CREDIT ACADEMIC COURSES

Students earn college credit while satisfying their high school requirements, giving them a great head start in achieving their academic goals.

OHS students that meet requirements can take dual credit classes through our collaboration with Navarro College. We offer English, history, government, economics, and many other courses that receive both high school and college credit. Tuition and textbooks are all paid for by OISD. There is no cost to students and parents as long as there is successful completion of each course. Dual credit requirements and other dual credit information can be found on the School Counseling page.

HONORS CLASSES

Although OHS does not currently offer advanced placement courses, there are several courses offered at OHS that are considered honors classes. Please see the student handbook for a list of these courses, or feel free to contact the school counselor for more information.
